Positive: We really enjoyed our stay at Ropemakers Cottage. The layout of the home worked really well for us, and there were some lovely thoughtful touches, including the welcome hamper. The location was great, and as another reviewer mentioned, there’s a lovely pizza restaurant nearby which was a real bonus. We were also pleasantly surprised that the church bells didn’t disturb our sleep at all.
The vast majority of the cottage felt clean and comfortable, and communication throughout our stay was excellent — friendly, helpful and responsive. Overall, it was a lovely place to stay and we really appreciated the care and attention to detail.
Negative: There were a few things we felt could be improved. The cleaners need to look UP a little more carefully, as there was some mould and cobwebs on the bathroom ceiling. The bathroom itself also feels like it could do with some renovation, as it doesn’t quite meet the standard of the rest of the home. For example, as well as being dated, we experienced some drainage issues when taking a shower and there is some rust around the light.
We weren’t aware when booking that the upstairs of the property belongs to the neighbouring cottage, so it was a little surprising to be able to hear people above us. The first evening (Friday) was wonderfully peaceful, but Saturday night was considerably noisier, which made settling our two-year-old to bed a little more challenging.
One other thing we would have loved was a little more information about the history of the cottage. The black hooks on the bathroom ceiling initially looked like something out of a horror movie! I’m sure they have an interesting connection to the building’s history as an original ropemakers cottage, and it would have been fascinating to know more about them.
We’re only mentioning these points because we want to give an honest and balanced review. Importantly, none of them would put us off staying again — we had a wonderful stay and really enjoyed the cottage overall.

A lovely cottage with easy access to Sherwood Forest
Positive: We thought it was in a great location, and overall the whole place was lovely and relaxing which is what we wanted. it was nice to arrive and have milk and tea, coffee and breakfast options all there. It saved needing to go to the store as soon as we got there. It was nicely presented and very cosy with the right cottage feel to it. The kitchen was pretty well equipped. Location wise to a store, or to travel to other places like Sherwood Forest etc. it was great a few minutes in the car, it can even be walked via the nature reserve we found.
Negative: The bed mattress was not good. We sleep on a high end mattress at home and though don’t expect this when we go away the mattress was not good. It sank where people have slept and then had a bulge in the middle, after a few days our backs hurt. Items in the kitchen were not clean with dirty glasses in the cupboard we had to wash. There was black mold in the shower from the shower hose needing to be replaced as it’s spraying water up on the ceiling. The bath was also not clean so we had to do that just to have a bath after a long day hiking. Bathroom lighting is also questionable, the light near the shower if water hit it would be a danger and really should be looked into being replaced with a sealed unit with IP65 rating when it comes to spotlights. Parking out front was not an option due to it making it hard for the drive way of a neighbour. There is parking over the road and round the back near the church but that’s not very secure, but all seemed fine.

Had a great time, really nice place with character and everything you need for a short break
Positive: Really nicely thought out home with everything you could really need.
Negative: Main bed not to our taste (memory foam very hot at night and lacks back support we find)
Church bell goes all night every fifteen minutes, that is quite disturbing and means you can't really leave a window open when sleeping.
